Prajñākara

Prajñākara (Tib. Shes rab 'byung gnas) was an Indian Buddhist scholar and author of the Vinayasūtravyākhyāna ('Dul ba'i mdo rnam par bshad pa), a commentary on Guṇaprabha's Vinayasūtra. According to BDRC, he studied under Paṇḍita Jñānaśrī (paN+Di ta dz+nyA na shrI) and counted among his students Drokmi Lotsāwa Śākya Yeshe ('Brog mi lo tsā ba shākya ye shes) and Kaché Rinchen Dorje (Kha che rin chen rdo rje). His Vyākhyāna is written in clear, concise prose; rather than reproducing the Vinayasūtra and its autocommentary in full, it closely follows the root text's line of reasoning while paraphrasing the original. Along with several other major Indian commentaries, the Vyākhyāna came to occupy a central place in the Tibetan scholastic curriculum alongside Guṇaprabha's root Vinayasūtra, as part of the traditional "thirteen great texts" (gzhung chen bcu gsum).
