Mandalas for the cycle of the

Excellent Wishfulfilling Vase

('dod 'jo'i bum bzang)

INTRODUCTION[edit]

We are delighted to present here a newly designed collection of the mandalas of the Döjö Bumsang, prepared digitally by Umzé Tsultrim from Mindroling, in consultation with Dagpo Tulku Rinpoche at Shechen retreat center, Pema Ösel Ling, in Nepal. From among the many sadhanas of various yidam deities contained in the kahma and terma traditions of the most secret Vajrayana (belonging principally to the Nyingma but with some taken also from the Sarma traditions), the great tertön of Mindroling, Terdak Lingpa Gyurmé Dorjé (1646-1714) compiled for the present and ultimate benefit of fortunate disciples a collection of sadhanas known as Döjö Bumzang, the Excellent Wish-fulfilling Vase ('dod 'jo'i 'bum bzang).

This collection was carefully arranged in terms of elaborate mandalas for practice and less elaborate mandalas that act as "seats".[1] These are described briefly in the empowerment texts related to them and in greater detail in the of instructions for drawing the images (tsakli) and mandalas of the Dojo Bumzang composed by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820-1892), the holder of the Seven Transmissions and the crown jewel of all learned and accomplished masters. A further description can be found in a text composed by Khamtrul Rinpoche[2] in which he cites answers received from questions sent to Mindroling monastery concerning the way the mandalas are to be drawn. Finally, the mandalas are also described in the various explanatory texts contained in The Great Treasury of Discovered Teachings, Rinchen Terdzo Chenmo (rin chen gter mdzod chen mo).

When the various instructions for drawing the mandalas are subjected to careful examination, however, a number of questions and many uncertainties remain. For although the original documentation still exists, there are not many reliable descriptions and illustrations of the kind that would allow us to draw the mandalas with complete certainty as to their accuracy.

Fully aware of the importance of preparing the mandalas with utmost care we have not neglected anything that lay within the scope of our capacity. But conscious of the meagerness of our erudition and experience, acquired on the basis of what we have seen and heard, we certainly make no claim that our efforts are free from error. We therefore request those who might see this collection and who are learned in these matters to examine our work thoroughly and to correct the mistakes that it might contain.

Regarding the content of the collection, Khyentse Wangpo's manual describes fifty-nine mandalas, among which forty-six are meant to be drawn on canvas, including nine with complete doors and other elaborations.[3] In Khamtrul Rinpoche's answers to questions, however, no specific number is given but if they are counted, it will be found that there are twenty mandalas complete with doors and forty without doors, thus making sixty all together.

Regarding the configurations given in various scriptures, the mandalas may or may not include doors, and may be more or less elaborate. There may also be slightly different numbers of deities for the same mandala depending on whether they are described in detail or in summary fashion. We have placed on the mandalas the various dots (symbolizing the deities) and other details, including their numbers, in detail in order to meet the needs of the vajra masters and their assistant intent on the meticulous creation of the mandalas. In so doing, however, we have acted from necessity and not simply according to our own ideas.

Generally speaking, it was said by the Vajradhara of Mindroling, Tsewang Norbu, that in his monastery, there were exactly sixty-seven empowerments, no more no less. This is reported also in the notes of the Vajradhara of Garje, Sherab Tendar. Moreover, Jamgön Kongtrul Rinpoche mentions in his list of received teachings (gsan yig) that he received exactly sixty-seven empowerments of the Döjö Bumzang. He also mentions that, in practice, some empowerments may be given in either long or short form, but he does not specify how this is to be done. Be that as it may, in the present edition of digitally designed mandalas, we have added to the drawings the name of each mandala and, when there were sufficient grounds and the need to do so, we have mentioned whether the mandalas are in detailed or simplified forms.[4]

  1. "Mandalas for practice" (sgrup dkyil) are complete and elaborate mandalas used for visualization during sadhana practice. "Seat mandalas” (gdan dkyil) are the mandalas in simplified form placed as a "seat” beneath ceremonial vases (bum pa) and tormas (gtor ma).
  2. Although the colophon is not specific, the author of this text is probably the third Khamtrul Rinpoche, Ngawang Kunga Tendzin (1680-1728).
  3. Mandalas drawn in the greatest detail are equipped with complete sets of doors (sgo rdzogs) as well as porticos, charnel grounds and so on.
  4. This introduction was composed in Tibetan by Dagpo Tulku and Umzed Tsultrim, and roughly translated in English by Matthieu R. and Wulstan F.
